Why I Canceled Thanksgiving This Year

November 21, 2018

This year, I was planning to our first Thanksgiving in our home in Irvine, California. We invited several friends to celebrate with us, and I had a big day planned complete with lots of cooking!

One by one, our guests began to cancel, and some had decided to stop by in between other feasts. It was time for a new game plan!

I began to think about our reality...

  • My husband Robby and I are working extra hard in our business (we’re in the sowing season...more about that in an upcoming video).

  • Robby only gets one full day off.

  • I actually hate cooking.

  • I’m not that great of a cook.

  • Our kids don’t eat Thanksgiving food, so it would be anticlimactic to cook a bunch of food and it be just the two of us eating.

Why would we need to follow the status quo? We don’t! We decided to order our meal at Urban Plates (a big shout out, we love you!) and we’ve decided to go to the movies together as a family.

We’ve also decided to bake desserts and drink champagne, and my awesome personal assistant and her boyfriend are stopping by to join us for that (because who could say no to desserts and champagne?!)

Although the original plans fell through, I’m excited about the new plan. With less cooking we get to spend more quality time together and enjoy the day with our kids. We also get to sleep in, and play! Cuz if we’re not having fun, what’s the point?

We’re also planning to have another Thanksgiving in December with my mother-in-law who lives in Connecticut is coming to visit. Because who said Thanksgiving has to be on Thursday anyway? I’m super grateful, and that’s what it’s all about.

From my family to yours, we wish you a very happy Thanksgiving, no matter how you choose to spend it. I hope it’s exactly what you want the day to be!

Much Love,
